When I was little all I wanted to watch was Mulan. My rocking horse was "Khan," I had a toy dog named "Little Brother," and my greatest wish was to be followed around by a small dragon voiced by a Black comedian. Oh, and to save China!
The new, live action Mulan is both a natural progression from the cartoon as we travel into "woke land," and a retelling that, in some ways is too similar to feminist re- tellings of classic fairy tales we've seen in recent years. Overall, I give the movie 4.5 out of 5 chocolate chip cookies.
On the tale end of Disney's many, many other live- action remakes of recent years, Mulan falls short. It isn't a musical, the cast isn't what American audiences might consider diverse, and Mushu isn't even in it. I worry that this new version will fade into obscurity in much the same way that most of the other live- action remakes have, and Hua Mulan is so much more than a flash in the pan.
It is important to point out, however, that this Mulan is no less brave than her counterpart in the original. The addition of a witch in the story is said to be closer to the original epic, or at least one version of the original tale. There's no real love interest in the story, which was refreshing (if disappointing, because who doesn't love Shang!?), and the costumes and setting were incredible. Most importantly, the whole cast is Asian or Asian- American, and blows the ideas that "all Asian people look the same" completely out of the water.
I would absolutely watch it again, but I'll still complain over the loss of "I'll Make A Man Out Of You."
